Do All Bees Make Honey?

All Bees Make Honey: Myth

Did you know that bees are the only insects that produce a food source suitable for human consumption? It’s true in the case of that delicious honey you use in your tea and smoothies, but do all bees produce this truly amazing superfood? Let’s find out in this month’s fact or fake.

For centuries, bees have been commonly associated with producing honey — typically with no mention of the specific type of bee making it. To date, more than 20,000 species of bees, all with their own set of special behaviors and traits, have been recorded around the world — but only one makes true honey. That species is the honeybee. In comparison, other bees such as bumblebees do store nectar, but the amounts are tiny in relation to the cache reserved by honeybees to get them through the winter months. The bumblebee’s honey is not fit for human harvesting and consumption.
